Scare Case

It’s a little bit of scary, with a whole lot of fun.

d20_0125

Back in March an idea arose. Like a seedling pushing its way up through the earth, it squirmed its way out from under the leaf matter and began to establish itself. The idea of putting on a “one night only” performance intrigued us at BATS. Especially one that was “open air” and set in amongst the beautiful backdrop of Wilson Botanic Park. If we had recognised then, the enormous logistical nightmare it was going to be,  it’s possible to think we might have said no. But much like our seedling, as yet not weighed down by the thoughts of the  large branches and trunk it will have to bare, who’s sole intent is reaching for the sky,  we just kept looking up and growing.

This was not just a BATS affair tho. Volunteers from all over our community and sponsors were needed to help support our endeavours. We thank thee. With Wilson Botanic Park supplying us with the nutrients of the earth, volunteers to be our branches and sponsors the sun to provide the catalyst, the flowers have blossomed and the fruit ripe for picking this weekend.

What is Scare Park?

Without giving too much away. On Sunday 30th Oct WBP will be given a Halloween makeover.

MarkSymonds

Halloween in the park is waiting for you.

The afternoon’s Trick or Treat Spectacular, (SOLD OUT) will provide a family favourite trick or treat, lolly bonanza. Kids will take their parents on an undulating course around the park and get to meet and receive lollies from a variety of friendly characters.  Vampires, Witches, Pirates, Zombies, Dolls, Mermaids to name a few spoilers. With food vans and live entertainment also on hand this will be a great fun family afternoon.

As night falls however and with the children safely in their beds, the park continues its transformation with a haunted and scarier ambience. While the live entertainment continues over in the amphitheatre The scare park is opened. Shadows through trees, noises in the dark, bubbling smoke and cackling laughs all add to the “live theatre” as various characters act out their role as you the onlooker amble your way around the course.

Beyond Apocalypse lane and past the spiders lair,

the Trolls on bridge that quake and ghosts that rise to dire.

Dracula leaves his bite and the sirens lure you in,

with Pirates of the open sea, please do not try to swim.

Mad doctors operate, amongst  the walking dead,

the cries  and growls that emanate from the old wooden shed.

The limbs of leftover zombie feeds, what lurks in deep thick fog,

beware the helpful backpackers……In that cage, is that a dog?

Some Statistics

As mentioned the idea started in and around last March. Many months of planning.

We have over 50 volunteers in character dress and over 12 “scare Zones” throughout the 1 klm walk. Dozens of lights, fog machines, audio equipment and animated props required approximately 500m of cabling with generators and batteries supplying the majority of power. Many of the sets and props were built by volunteers and BATS over  a number of working bees and months. Over a thousand different sound effects were mixed down with ambient backing music. I have to give a special thanks to the makeup, not sure how much latex and blood we have gone through but the makeup team have been unbelievable. Many costumes have been made by the actors themselves and others supplied  by BATS. All of this and more moved in on the day and pulled down  by next morning.

No small matter

For an inaugural event this is no small step. Its a leap with faith and we are counting on you to turn up and be entertained. $20  for a ticket to Scare Park will be worth it. Book now or miss out like many of the unfortunate Trick or treat patrons did as we were just unable to accommodate the enormous interest.

Scary rating

I have been asked by a number of people(trying to get information out of me without success) what level is this at and I have said, this more like a Dr Who episode than say, Cabin in the woods, more of an M than a R rating. We have after all, armed you with a sonic screwdriver, well a glow stick, mehh same thing.

Blood, hacked limbs are on view and spine tingling characters are ready to pounce or just suddenly appear.  But we have made this evening of dark fear as safe and exciting as we can without giving you nightmares, well not for too long anyway.

Come meet some of the scary characters we have on show. Whats real and whats not we’ll leave up to you.

Soothsayer in raptures

Slythnah the soothsayer demands attention

Characters of all sorts turned up at Wilson Botanic Park Berwick last Saturday afternoon to join the growing group of cast and crew involved in the upcoming Casey’s   Halloween Scare Park event.

Safety was first on the menu and we all took a wander around the scare park route assessing risks and becoming familiar with our zone areas and zone members.

MarkSymonds

Risk assessment wandering.

A full lighting assessment  was completed in the darkness of night week b4 last and the team are now busy finishing off the effects and safety lighting requirements. We also have some fabulous news with regards to our Apocalyptic zone youth community outreach venture. More on that later.

Character building

Safety now sorted, we turned our attention to the building of characters within the zones. Thomas Out, director of the upcoming BATS show Wizard of Odd lead the group discussion on how to become familiar with , knowing your characters traits and expanding your character. The group then split into their zones and discussions began to sort out who is who.

Very important job offer!!–SFXMakeup Co-ordinator

There is still plenty to do tho.

We are in great need for a volunteer SFXmakeup artist to take on the co-ordination of makeup for the event. Share this with anyone you think might be interested.

This is not a demanding time consuming position. Many are doing their own. We just need someone to make sure everyone is “covered”.

We have 3-4 willing, capable, young, enthusiastic makeup helpers, ready to assist.
We have a number of masks to help limit the amount of those needing makeup.

But we do need someone of mature age with experience who can attend the rehearsals(only two to go now) and the event, liaison with the actors and Scott to help decide how much of what and who needs what and where to get it from and lastly how long it will take to apply on the night.

If you know anyone who might be interested please get in contact with us on the HSP facebook page.

We need YOU!

Because Elgoog is so useless we need you to help fill out the last remaining positions.

Cast positions still available:

Vampire/assistant
Dr Deaths Victim.
Trolls *3
Highway ambusher.
Candle Walkers *4
Apocalypse hermits/walking dead *2
Spider Lair operators *2
Ghostsofakind *2

All positions can be either male or female. +15 upwards.
For further details contact us @ HSP fb page

MarkSymonds

Else we will send Elgoog after you

Props, an ongoing production

Many, many props will be used at this event to enhance the characters and create atmosphere. Corpses, props, sets and those sorts of construction projects are tackled at the Belfry. Always looking for volunteers and happy to teach those willing to  help build.

Rehearsals

Next rehearsal, in October, is a big one. Hopefully costumes and sets will be mostly sorted by then so we can really get into the zones and have fun with props and playing  out our characters. Come and join us. There are plenty of positions for actors, helpers and guides available.

Walking the zones can be a bloody business.

As we departed our mascot bat sung a glorious rendition of  “it aint over till its over”. Unfortunately most photos were confiscated by its manager but I managed to sneak this one out.

Aladdin’s pickling cave

Goodbye pickling shed

With the Mutant Ballerinas returned safely to their home planet, we can take time to pause and stroll down memory lane.

MarkSymonds

The Pickling Shed

A number of planets aligned this week to lead me down this journey of past shows and forgotten realms. The first show I photographed for BATS, was Aladdin back in 2014. Just this week I embarked on an edition 2 release, a re print of the Aladdin photobook. Going through the photos pool, hunting for forgotten or unpublished images, memories flooded with smiles soaked into my thoughts. How young we all were:) At the same time another event of historic significance was happening down at our stomping grounds at the Factory/Shed .

MarkSymonds

Reflections of sunsets passed

For a number of years now BATS, along with other theatre groups used, thanks to the City of Casey, the “Pickling Shed” as a storage area for the larger props and sets. This area is ear marked for redevelopment and the old unsafe building is due for demolition. A few Sundays back we removed the last few items and walked its empty dust encrusted floor for the last time. Beautiful shafts of light ripped through the holy roof like a a theatre full of spotlights. Yours truly did not have his camera, so this vision will remain my memory only.

MarkSymonds

Bid ye farewell oh pickling shed

In house

Most of this stuff is of little consequence unless you are “in house”, those in the know, one whom has shared such moments. But history is history and must be recorded. For those that have been a part of this walk, hopefully a small smile of remembrance will drift across your lips as you peruse these glimpses into times past.

How young we were

It’s amazing how time flies and how young we once looked. It’s also a privilege to watch some of these young folk grow and mature. Not just in the theatre walks but also as human beings.

Rehearsing for Aladdin

gassin_river

Gassin taking time out on the river

Gassin in one of the promotional shots of the show. Relaxing by the river side. Some distinguished and famous characters wander the banks of the other side. In house jokes for the most part but that’s theatre. If you think watching the show is what its all about you are mistaken. Take a step outside your comfort zone, your sofa and TV and try a role in a show. You may never look back and I guarantee, you will have oodles of stories to tell anyone who will lend an ear.

Community theatre relies heavily on volunteers, without them you’d be stuck in front of a boring TV full of commercials or worse a plot that never changes.

Interactive

Theatre is interactive it changes each show. It’s an evolving living dynamic thing. You daren’t take your eye off of for a second, not even to pop a malteser in fear you’ll miss something extraordinary.

oh yeah thats what I’m talking about

History tells me(if I recall correctly) back in the days of yore when lenses were, lets just say in their early development, agricultural stage. These spot lights were  larger still, took 3 muscle bustling military (theatre lighting owes a lot to the military) lads to direct and drive it.

Earth boy makes history

Opening night

Nerves were pushed aside as the cast and crew of BATS current running show, Earth Boy and the Mutant Ballerinas danced onto the stage of Cranbourne Community Theatre.

MarkSymonds

Comic book shop employees in fear of…?

What’s the story?

Earth boy revolves around a tale of superheroes from outer space,  occupants of comic book shop fighting off a mayor who’s trying to demolish the place, a broken hearted saviour, a spoilt and popular with the girls mayor’s son,  and of course a super evil villain.

MarkSymonds

The Mutant Ballerinas arrive on earth seeking a special pendant and thus begins a musical and comic relieved, entertaining entanglement of characters, alliances and plot twists.

This is a great show to take the kids for a few hours this school holiday season and it has a plot thick enough to keep the parents entertained. But get in quick. At the time of writing we have two shows down and only three more to go.
